Google to include all Android backups in storage limits

Engadget · 1 day ago

Google is revising its approach to calculating storage consumption by expanding what counts against user quotas. Beginning this month, all data saved through Android's backup feature will be included in the storage limit calculation, whereas previously only Google Photos media and MMS message attachments were measured. New Android users will experience this change immediately, whilst established account holders will see the adjustment introduced gradually.

Alongside the policy shift, Google has introduced expanded backup configuration options that allow users to exclude specific categories of data—device settings, call history, and text messages—from automatic backups. The company anticipates the storage impact will average approximately 40 megabytes per account. This adjustment reflects Google's broader strategy of adjusting storage policies, building on its May 2026 reduction of complimentary storage allocation for new accounts.

  • Starting July 7, Google will include all Android backup data in account storage quotas, rolling out to new users immediately and existing users over coming months
  • Expected impact is roughly 40 megabytes per user on average, with new controls allowing selective exclusion of settings, call logs, and message backups
  • Continues a pattern of tightened storage policies; Google also reduced free tier from 15GB to 5GB for new accounts in May
