Surveillance footage has captured the moment part of the roof of a BJ's wholesale store in Ocean Township, New Jersey, collapsed on Monday as the area was battered by torrential rain and severe flooding. The incident, which occurred at around 11.15am along the Jersey Shore, sent debris and water gushing into the store and has since gone viral on social media, highlighting the dangers posed by the extreme weather hitting the region.
According to the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office, 27 people, including staff and shoppers, were inside at the time, but no one was injured. Two people became partially trapped but freed themselves without needing first responders. The footage shows shoppers milling calmly through the aisles before the roof gave way, with water pushing tables and shopping trolleys along the floor. One elderly man was bumped forward by a table but stayed on his feet and was reportedly unharmed. Sheriff Shaun Golden told NBC News that those inside had been "lucky".
