Croatian Six inquiry finds three men may be innocent of Sydney bomb plot
A New South Wales judicial inquiry has found that three of the men known as the "Croatian Six", jailed in 1981 over an alleged plot to bomb targets across Sydney, may be innocent. Acting Justice Robert Hulme concluded there is reasonable doubt over the guilt of Joseph Kokotovic, Ilija Kokotovic and Mile Nekic, describing their convictions as a "longstanding injustice". The finding matters because it reopens one of Australia's most contested terrorism cases and paves the way for the convictions to be formally challenged more than four decades on.
The inquiry, ordered in 2023, examined the convictions of all six men, who were each sentenced to 15 years over an alleged conspiracy to bomb two travel agencies, a Serbian social club, the Elizabethan Theatre in Newtown and Sydney's water supply. The 546-page report found no reasonable doubt about the guilt of the other three, Maksimilian Bebic, Vjekoslav Brajkovic and Anton Zvirotic. The men, members of Croatian national organisations, have always maintained they were framed. The Court of Criminal Appeal will now decide whether the three convictions should be overturned.
