A pressing engagement becomes Audible drama among Jilly Cooper’s final projects
Audible has announced an audio drama adaptation of Jilly Cooper's short story "A Pressing Engagement", featuring a starry British voice cast including Rhea Norwood, Corey Mylchreest, Hannah Waddingham, Richard Ayoade, Vivian Oparah and Bessie Carter. The production is notable as one of the final projects Cooper was involved in before her death in October 2025, with the author contributing to early development.
Set in London in 1978, the story follows Hester, a secretary trapped in dull administrative work whose older boyfriend Julian won't commit. Offered a fresh start assisting a film producer, she fakes an engagement to her childhood friend Nico — who is unaware of the plan — to spare her boss's feelings. The short story was first published in Cooper's 1981 collection "Lisa & Co". It is adapted by Dare Aiyegbayo, a scriptwriter on the Disney+ series "Rivals", and directed by Sarah Esdaile, in collaboration with Cooper's estate, her agent Felicity Blunt and production firm Happy Prince. It is due for release on Audible on 16 July 2026.
