University of Melbourne physics job open only to women draws criticism
The University of Melbourne has advertised a senior lecturer post in mathematical physics that is open only to women, whether cisgender or transgender. The role is a full-time, tenured position paying a maximum of around $206,000 a year including superannuation, and the restriction has drawn attention because it explicitly bars male applicants from a highly paid academic job.
The advertisement states that "only women, cis or trans, are eligible to apply", a measure the university says is permitted under the Equal Opportunity Act. The advertised base salary ranged from $124,656 to $176,065, with an additional 17 per cent superannuation.
