James Ford tells us about writing new album ‘Lost In Another World’ while receiving treatment for leukemia
Producer and musician James Ford has told NME about creating his new album 'Lost In Another World' while undergoing hospital treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), an aggressive cancer of the white blood cells. The record — his second solo LP and the first released under his full name, James Ellis Ford — will be released on 14 August via Domino, led by the psychedelic single 'Overtones'. The story is notable both for Ford's stature, having produced the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode, Blur, Pulp and Fontaines D.C., and for the deeply personal circumstances in which the album was made.
Ford wrote and recorded the whole album in just over two weeks in early 2025 while isolated on a ward at Barts Hospital between rounds of chemotherapy, describing the experience as lonely and disorientating, akin to a "prison sentence". Having his wife bring in a laptop and microphone, he wrote candidly and without filters, producing diary-like songs that confront his mortality, offer himself reassurance, and serve as "love letters" to his wife and young son. He also praised the NHS and spoke of plans to perform the album live.
