The ‘G-Wagen of golf carts’ could be the ideal second car
A Lisbon-based EV start-up called Amble has unveiled the Amble One, a premium, street-legal open-air electric buggy pitched as a household's ideal second car rather than its main vehicle. Founded by alumni of Apple, Audi and e-bike firm Cowboy, the company is positioning the compact vehicle as an antidote to increasingly large, fast and overpowered trucks and SUVs, arguing that most short trips — school runs, grocery shopping and local errands — do not require a full-sized car.
Initially marketed to hotels and resorts, the Amble One features a neo-retro design with no doors, folding seats, leather and cork finishes, and cargo racks. Its 15kW motor and 11kWh battery give a top speed of 40mph (65km/h) and a range of up to 62 miles (100km), charging from a standard wall socket in five hours. To meet Europe's L7e quadricycle rules, the whole vehicle must weigh under 450kg — a demanding target the team cites as a key engineering challenge. CEO Adrien Roose draws inspiration from the Lunar Rover and Mercedes G-Wagen, while conceding some might call it a "glorified golf cart", albeit one with far greater range.
