Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong to Front Punk Supergroup Honoring the Ramones
Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is to lead a new punk supergroup, Cretin Family, at a concert marking the 50th anniversary of the Ramones' debut album. The Official Ramones 50th Anniversary Tribute will be held on 30 August at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, with proceeds going to Dr David Agus's cancer research at the Ellison Institute Research Foundation. The show highlights the Ramones' enduring influence on punk, half a century after they helped shape the genre.
Alongside Armstrong, Cretin Family features Rancid's Tim Armstrong, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and former Ramones bassist C.J. Ramone, all of whom paid tribute to the band's legacy. The evening will be hosted by John Travolta, who will screen his 1976 film Carrie for its anniversary as well as his directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach. The Ramones split in 1996, and all four original members have since died, though later drummers and C.J. Ramone continue to perform the band's music. When the Ramones entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, Green Day performed in their place.
