Tributes pour in for electric unicycle rider, 46, killed in crash

Daily Mail · 2 hours ago

The wife of Benjamin Franklin Wells-Lane, 46, has paid an emotional tribute to her husband after he was killed in a crash while riding an electric unicycle on a busy road in Dorset. He died following a collision on the A338 Wessex Way in Bournemouth at around 4pm on Friday, where emergency services attended but pronounced him dead at the scene. The case highlights the risks faced by riders of electric personal transport devices on major roads.

Originally from Utah in the United States, Mr Wells-Lane had moved with his wife to Poole, Dorset, in January 2025, having married in July 2024. In a statement released by Dorset Police, his wife described him as the "kindest and most caring" person she had met and as her "giant", standing 6ft 4in tall. She said she had been overwhelmed by the response from his many friends, including some who had never formally met him but remembered a bearded man on a unicycle with an infectious smile, as well as friends from the Dorset Wildlife Trust.
