Liz Meriwether Adapting Britney Spears Biopic ‘The Woman In Me’ At Universal For Jon M. Chu

Deadline · 3 hours ago

Emmy-nominated writer Liz Meriwether has been hired to write the screenplay for the film adaptation of Britney Spears's memoir, The Woman in Me, at Universal. The project sees Wicked producer Marc Platt producing and Jon M. Chu directing, and it signals continued momentum for one of the most anticipated music biopics in development.

Universal acquired the rights to the memoir with Platt and Chu in August 2024, with Chu having previously worked on an earlier draft charting the rise, fall and comeback of the McComb, Mississippi-born pop star behind hits such as "…Baby One More Time", "Toxic" and "Oops!… I Did It Again". The memoir was the fastest-selling in Simon & Schuster's history, shifting more than six million copies worldwide after Spears signed a reported 15 million dollar book deal in 2022. Meriwether's credits include Fox's New Girl, FX's Dying for Sex and Hulu's The Dropout, while Universal declined to comment on her involvement.
