ICE says officer shot and killed illegal immigrant who tried to ram him with car in Houston
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) says one of its officers shot and killed a man during an operation in Houston after he allegedly tried to run the officer over with his vehicle. The agency identified the man as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican citizen living in the country illegally, and the incident adds to a series of recent confrontations in which ICE agents have opened fire during attempted arrests.
According to an ICE spokesperson, officers tried to conduct a traffic stop at around 6:50am on the Tuesday in question. Araujo allegedly attempted to evade them and "weaponised his vehicle" in a bid to run over an officer, who then fired in what the agency described as self-defence. Araujo was taken to hospital, where he later died, and the FBI is now investigating the shooting. ICE noted a similar incident on 1 July involving another Mexican national, Clemente Lara-Hernandez, who remains at large, and the agency cited sharp reported increases in assaults, vehicular attacks and death threats against its officers.
