Ohio cold case reportedly solved as man is charged in 1985 hotel murder linked to Georgia Cracker Barrel clue

Fox News · 2 months ago

A 62-year-old Columbus man, Randy Lane McAllister, has been charged over the murder of travelling auto parts salesman John Christopher Warren, who was found dead in his Holiday Inn hotel room in Middletown, Ohio, on 17 October 1985. A Warren County grand jury indicted McAllister on charges of aggravated murder and murder after investigators reopened the decades-old cold case and re-examined forensic evidence. The development matters because it marks a possible resolution to a killing that went unsolved for roughly 40 years, and it illustrates how modern forensic analysis can revive long-dormant investigations.

Warren, who was in town for meetings, was found dead the day after checking in, and detectives believed he had been killed during a robbery. Several of his belongings were missing, including his 1985 Oldsmobile; the items were later found behind a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Dalton, Georgia, while the car turned up in Redington Beach, Florida. Although leads were pursued at the time, there was insufficient evidence to proceed. The case was reopened in 2019, and analysis of Warren's recovered belongings led detectives to McAllister and a now-deceased accomplice, according to prosecutors, who described it as a case of extreme violence.
