How ‘RuneScape’ Studio Is Prepping a 25-Year-Old PC Franchise for Its First-Ever Console Release, Including Crossplay
British studio Jagex is preparing to bring its "RuneScape" franchise to consoles for the first time in the series' 25-year history with "Dragonwilds", a survival title launching on 15 September 2026. Currently available in Steam Early Access on PC, the game will come to Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, marking a significant expansion for a franchise long rooted in PC play.
Built in Unreal Engine 5, which has made porting more straightforward, the studio says its main challenge has been adapting the game's interface-heavy design to feel natural on a controller. Creative director Rick Turek and product director Robert Galassi-Fox told Variety that ensuring a strong controller experience was a priority throughout development, including during the Alpha. The game has sold more than one million Early Access copies as of June, and Jagex intends to support crossplay so console and PC players can play together, as part of a wider push towards "forever games", fair play and reduced monetisation.
