Tennis legend Martina Navratilova calls for SJSU to dismiss volleyball coach amid allegations: ‘Fire his a–!’
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has publicly called for San Jose State University (SJSU) to sack its women's volleyball coach, Todd Kress, after Fox News Digital reported on a letter of allegations sent to the university in autumn 2024. The demand adds a prominent voice to scrutiny of the programme, which had already drawn national attention over a separate transgender athlete controversy involving the team.
Navratilova amplified a post by US Olympic swimming gold medallist Nancy Hogshead, writing "Fire his a–!" and describing the situation as "truly sickening". According to the reporting, in October 2024 SJSU's athletic department received a letter from a woman who played under Kress at Fairfield University in 1998, alleging that he attacked her in a hotel room after a 1998 NCAA Tournament defeat to Clemson. SJSU officials reportedly acknowledged the letter, thanked her and apologised for her experience, but Kress was neither suspended nor removed and remains head coach. Fox News verified the woman played under Kress but withheld her name; SJSU and Kress have been approached for comment.
