The U.S. Navy has named Commander Gabriel Edwards as the sailor lost at sea after an MH-60S helicopter made an emergency water landing in the Arabian Sea on 1 July. Edwards, the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 aboard the USS George H.W. Bush, went missing during the incident, and the Navy suspended its search on Sunday after failing to find him.

Three of the helicopter's four crew members were successfully recovered. The search for Edwards lasted more than 102 hours and covered over 14,000 square miles. Rear Admiral Todd Cimicata, commander of Carrier Strike Group 10, paid tribute to Edwards as a husband, father, friend and leader. Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao directed that Edwards be posthumously promoted to the rank of captain. A native of Oakland, Oregon, Edwards graduated from Norfolk State University in 2006.
