Community, connection & sport – GAA growth in Europe

BBC Sport · 1 month ago

Over the past five years, Gaelic athletic sports have gained considerable traction across Europe, with membership climbing 40 percent to reach 6,000 participants across 110 clubs. The expansion reflects increased youth engagement and a notable surge in female participation, particularly in camogie, which has doubled its numbers and now attracts nearly 2,000 players. Gaelic games have been integrated into school curricula in some regions, notably Brittany.

The French experience demonstrates the sport's genuine appeal beyond Irish diaspora communities. In France, approximately 95 percent of participants are local nationals who discovered the sport and chose to pursue it, rather than Irish expats maintaining cultural traditions. This pattern has enabled the sport to establish footholds in multiple French cities and regions, where it competes against entrenched football, rugby, and handball by offering a distinctive blend of established team-sport elements aligned with French sporting culture.
