Gilla Band announce new album ‘Pugnello’ and share abrasive single ‘Placeholder’

NME · 1 month ago

Dublin experimental group Gilla Band, formerly known as Girl Band, have announced their fourth studio album, ‘Pugnello’, alongside a new single called ‘Placeholder’. It marks their first full-length release since 2022’s ‘Most Normal’, continuing a career that has established them as one of the more singular and idiosyncratic guitar acts of their generation, drawing on post-punk, noise-rock and industrial influences.

The album will be released on 25 September via Rough Trade Records, produced by the band and recorded and mixed by bassist Daniel Fox, with a ten-track listing that includes the earlier single ‘Giraffe’. Singer Dara Kiely said ‘Placeholder’, built on an abrasive synthetic backing, explores childhood nostalgia and mental-health behaviours through references to ‘Big Brother’, Harold Lloyd, ‘Power Rangers’ and “a dangerous amount of Coldplay”. The band have also announced two intimate UK shows in October — Manchester’s White Hotel on 7 October, ahead of its January closure, and London’s ICA on 8 October — adding to previously announced European and US dates.
