Mubi has acquired worldwide rights to "Making Marie Antoinette," a behind-the-scenes documentary about Sofia Coppola's Oscar-winning 2006 film, marking the movie's 20th anniversary. The documentary is built from roughly 80 hours of previously unseen footage shot on set by the late Eleanor Coppola, Sofia's mother, and fulfils her wish that the material be turned into a feature-length film. The acquisition matters as both a tribute to Eleanor Coppola's legacy as a documentarian and an intimate portrait of a mother-daughter creative relationship.

The footage was shot in 2005 at the Palace of Versailles, where Coppola's "Marie Antoinette" — starring Kirsten Dunst as the queen and Jason Schwartzman as Louis XVI — became the first film production granted permission to shoot. Edited by Aaron Matthews with input from Eleanor Coppola's friends Davia Nelson and Liz Bird, the documentary features Diane Lane voicing passages from Eleanor Coppola's journals. It is produced by Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani, Rachel Dengiz, Youree Henley and Sofia Coppola, and financed by Our Films, Mediawan Rights and Entourage Pictures; Mubi, which previously handled Coppola's "Priscilla" internationally, will announce release plans soon.
