LG Micro RGB Evo Review: Brilliant, Bright, Not Budget-Friendly

Wired · 5 hours ago

WIRED has reviewed LG's Micro RGB Evo television, a flagship set built on the latest micro RGB LED technology that uses tiny red, green and blue lights to deliver more accurate colour, stronger contrast and richer blacks than conventional LED and OLED screens. The reviewer scored it 8 out of 10, concluding that it produces stunning picture quality that can rival OLED and QLED — but only after considerable tinkering with the settings, and at a price that places it firmly at the premium end of a crowded market.

The 75-inch model tested retails at $5,000, with 86-inch and 100-inch versions costing $7,000 and $8,000. It faces competition from rivals including Samsung's Micro RGB set and cheaper mini RGB models from Hisense and Sony. The reviewer found the LG and Samsung micro RGB models superior for picture quality, praising skin tones, vibrant colours and full coverage of the BT.2020, DCI-P3 and Adobe RGB colour gamuts, though OLED still held an edge on contrast in dark scenes. Drawbacks included a fiddly, non-backlit remote, LG's divisive WebOS software, only Wi-Fi 5 connectivity, and the effort required to achieve the best image.

  • LG's Micro RGB Evo delivers superb colour but needs lots of setting adjustment.
  • The 75-inch model costs $5,000, rising to $8,000 for 100 inches.
  • Scored 8/10; OLED still wins on contrast, and the remote frustrates.
