King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, the prolific Australian psychedelic rock band, have announced their 28th studio album, Alien Metal, due out later this summer on their p(doom) label. Whereas last year's Phantom Island explored orchestral rock, this record pivots to electronic dance music, marking a notable stylistic shift driven by frontman Stu Mackenzie's immersion in the Eurorack modular synthesizer.

The eight-track album grew out of the "rave shows" the band debuted last year, after member Joey Walker introduced Mackenzie to modular synths — an experience he says "completely rewired" his brain and made him "relearn" music from scratch. Lead single "Level 5", with a video by Hayden Somerville, leans heavily on beats, and Mackenzie notes the band scrapped more material than ever before. The band's forthcoming North American dates include a run at Forest Hills Stadium in New York, culminating in a rave show on 22 August and another at Brooklyn's Under The K Bridge Park on 23 August.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are an Australian rock band known for releasing music at a rapid pace and for shifting styles from one record to the next, including metal, jazz, folk and, most recently, orchestral rock. Frontman Stu Mackenzie writes and produces much of the group's material, and the band has built a reputation for restless experimentation over roughly a decade and a half of near-constant output.

The band began performing so-called "rave shows" last year, a departure from their usual guitar-driven live sets, after member Joey Walker introduced Mackenzie to modular synthesizers, a type of electronic instrument used to build and manipulate sounds from scratch. This shift towards electronic and dance-influenced music reflects a broader pattern in the band's career, where a new sonic interest often leads directly to a new album.

The band regularly tours North America and has a large, dedicated fan base that follows its stylistic changes closely, making each new album and each shift in direction a notable event within that fanbase and the wider psychedelic and independent rock scene.
