Teenager arrested after two girls, 13, seriously injured in German school attack

BBC World · 2 hours ago

Two 13-year-old girls have been seriously injured and a 16-year-old suspect arrested following an attack at the Welfen-Gymnasium secondary school in Schongau, a small town in Upper Bavaria, Germany. Police launched a major operation in the area and said the suspect, believed to have acted alone, was carrying both a knife and a firearm. The incident adds to concerns over violence at German schools and is being treated by police as a "rampage".

Neither girl is in a life-threatening condition, though the number of others affected and the severity of their injuries are still being clarified. Police initially declined to confirm what weapon was used, but Bavaria's interior minister Joachim Herrmann said he believed the girls were stabbed, something police have not yet confirmed. Herrmann added that the suspect had previously received psychiatric treatment and that there were unconfirmed indications they were a former pupil. A contact point for relatives and parents has been set up at a local fire station.
