Amorim apologises for silence towards Man Utd fans
Ruben Amorim has apologised to Manchester United's supporters for staying silent since his dismissal from Old Trafford in January, while insisting he was "proud" to have coached the club. The apology came as the 41-year-old Portuguese was unveiled as the new head coach of AC Milan on a three-year contract, ending his break from the game and marking his return to management after a difficult 14-month spell in England.
Speaking at a 35-minute media conference in English, Amorim was only asked about his United tenure at the very end, admitting he had made mistakes and was hungrier to succeed as a result, though he declined to specify them. He appeared alongside Milan owner Gerry Cardinale, who vowed a hands-on role after the club's collapse last season — seven points from their final eight games and a missed Champions League place. One of Amorim's first tasks is persuading 40-year-old Luka Modric to extend his contract. Milan face United in a pre-season friendly in Poland on 15 August.
