England midfielder Jordan Henderson has undergone surgery on a broken arm but has not been ruled out of the remainder of the 2026 World Cup. The 36-year-old suffered the freak injury when he fell awkwardly while attempting to jump over the advertising hoardings during celebrations after England's 3-2 last-16 victory over Mexico, and was carried off on a stretcher while receiving oxygen. Although a return is considered a long shot, it is understood he could still feature in matchday squads, with the possibility of playing in a cast being explored.

Henderson, who had the operation in England's Kansas City base, will remain with the squad for the tournament and was described by team-mate Morgan Rogers as the "heartbeat of the group". The Brentford player made one substitute appearance in the 2-0 group win over Panama, becoming the first men's player to appear at four World Cups. Separately, manager Thomas Tuchel is expected to tell players to stop jumping over hoardings, while defender Marc Guehi, midfielder Declan Rice and right-back Reece James all missed training but are expected or hoped to be fit for Saturday's quarter-final against Norway in Miami.

  • Henderson has arm surgery but isn't ruled out of the World Cup.
  • Freak injury came celebrating over pitch-side hoardings after beating Mexico.
  • Guehi, Rice and James expected fit for Norway quarter-final.
