The Fantasy Saga That Helped Inspire Harry Potter Is Getting a Huge New Release

Collider · 2 hours ago

Library of America has announced The Complete Earthsea, a major new two-volume boxed set collecting Ursula K. Le Guin's influential fantasy cycle, due for release on 13 October 2026. The edition matters because Earthsea is regarded as a foundational work of modern fantasy, credited with helping to establish the "wizard goes to school" trope and the dragon lord tradition later popularised by series such as Harry Potter.

The hardcover set runs to 1,344 pages, is edited by Brian Attebery, and gathers the full saga: A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, Tehanu, Tales from Earthsea, The Other Wind and further related stories. It follows Ged, a smith's son who discovers a magical gift and attends a wizard school, where he unleashes a shadow creature he must ultimately learn to confront. Penguin Random House's listing splits the release into two volumes, with the earlier novels in the first and the later books in the second. The piece notes Earthsea is considered stranger and more thoughtful than many works it inspired, with magic that is powerful but dangerous.
