Barrett, Kagan to make rare Capitol Hill appearance as Supreme Court seeks more security amid threats

Fox News · 1 month ago

Supreme Court Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Elena Kagan are due to appear before a House Appropriations subcommittee next week to testify on the Court's proposed budget for the 2027 fiscal year. Such appearances are unusual — the last time justices testified before Congress was in 2019 — and this one comes shortly after a consequential term in which the Court both expanded President Trump's executive authority and struck down parts of his agenda, including his order restricting birthright citizenship and his "Liberation Day" tariffs.

A central element of the request is security funding, prompted by a rise in threats against the judiciary. The Court is seeking a total budget of $228 million, an increase of $20.5 million, of which $14.6 million is earmarked for stronger protection of justices and a further $2 million for security at their homes, funding roughly 25 additional Supreme Court Police officers. This follows a $30 million security increase approved by Congress in January. The US Marshals Service had recorded 166 threats against federal judges since 1 October, after more than 560 the previous year.
