Chartbreaker: How ‘TruckTok’ and Angst Powered Vincent Mason’s ‘Damned If I Do’

Billboard · 2 months ago

Country singer-songwriter Vincent Mason has scored his biggest breakthrough yet with "Damned If I Do", a gritty, rock-leaning track that became his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. The 25-year-old, who built his following by posting to TikTok during the pandemic, credits a mix of relentless live performance, streaming momentum and an unexpected boost from the platform's "TruckTok" community for turning the song into a career-defining hit.

Raised in Roswell, Georgia and inspired by John Mayer and Parker McCollum, Mason first went viral in early 2024 with "Hell is a Dance Floor", which led to a deal with Interscope/Music Soup and a partnership with UMG Nashville/MCA. He wrote and co-produced "Damned If I Do" in early 2025 with Lauren Hungate and Jacob Hackworth, teasing snippets on TikTok before its mid-July release; the track debuted on the Hot 100 in mid-May and peaked at No. 77. Nightly performances on his There I Go headlining tour, launched on 22 January, alongside his debut album of the same name (November 2025) and a Tonight Show debut in May, sustained the song's growth, while manager Matt Musacchio noted early truck-culture videos helped drive its initial reach.
