Elon Musk says X will send DMs when posts you’ve engaged with are corrected

TechCrunch · 1 month ago

X has announced plans to send users direct messages whenever content they have previously engaged with receives a factual correction through Community Notes, the platform's crowdsourced fact-checking system. The initiative targets a recognised limitation in current misinformation response: misleading posts can gather substantial engagement before corrections appear, diminishing those corrections' effectiveness at limiting inaccurate content spread.

Community Notes developed from Twitter's approach of relying on community consensus rather than centralised fact-checking authority, and similar mechanisms have been adopted by other platforms including Meta. However, research reveals significant obstacles to the system's effectiveness—studies have found that between 85 and 90 percent of submitted notes never become visible to users, with only around 8 percent reaching publication. Musk has not yet provided a timeline for when the notification feature will launch.

  • X will send direct messages notifying users when posts they've engaged with receive factual corrections through Community Notes
  • The feature aims to address how corrections often arrive too late to prevent misinformation from spreading
  • Research indicates Community Notes faces major scaling issues, with 85-90% of proposed notes remaining invisible to users
