Longtime Maine Democrat Troy Jackson has filed federal paperwork positioning himself to enter the state's US Senate race, should the party's nomination become available after rape allegations against current candidate Graham Platner surfaced on Monday. The move matters because Platner, a progressive backed by Senator Bernie Sanders, is under mounting pressure to quit, with senior Democrats including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer withdrawing support and urging him to step aside. Platner has denied the allegations as "categorically false" and remains in the race.

Under Maine law, Platner has until Monday 13 July 2026 to withdraw if Democrats wish to replace him on the November ballot, after which the state party would have until 27 July to select a new nominee. Jackson, who recently lost the Democratic gubernatorial primary, filed a Statement of Candidacy with the Federal Election Commission and condemned the allegations, but said he has not yet decided whether to seek the nomination. Notably, Jackson and Platner ran closely aligned progressive campaigns, appeared together at events, and both earned Sanders's backing.
