Emmy Noms Analysis: Diversity in Acting Nominees Down 39% While ‘The Pitt’ Cements Frontrunner Status and ‘Widow’s Bay’ Emerges as Dark Horse

The nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced on Wednesday, spanning 117 categories and 610 nominations, with HBO Max reaffirming its dominance, Apple TV rising into television's top tier and several presumed contenders falling short. HBO Max led all companies with 122 nominations, ahead of Netflix's 111 and a company-record 87 for Apple TV. Beneath the headline figures, however, the analysis notes a sharp fall in diversity among acting nominees.

The medical drama "The Pitt" led all programmes with 25 nominations, 13 of them in acting categories (aided by two self-submissions), one short of "Succession"'s record. Its HBO Max stablemate "Hacks" set a comedy series record with 24 nominations for its final season, while star Noah Wyle earned acting, directing and producing nods. Apple's newcomer "Pluribus" secured 18 nominations, powered by Rhea Seehorn. Notable casualties included "Stranger Things", shut out of major races in its final season, and "Your Friends and Neighbors", which drew only a drama series nomination and nothing else. "The Bear" also faltered, with most of its principal cast overlooked apart from Ayo Edebiri.
