‘Beef’ Creator Lee Sung Jin Talks Emmy Nominations, Asian Representation & Teases Character-First Approach To ‘X-Men’

Deadline · 1 month ago

"Beef" creator Lee Sung Jin has spoken to Deadline after the second season of the Netflix anthology drama secured 16 Emmy nominations, three more than its debut season. The recognition marks a personal milestone: Lee has become the first Asian television creator to earn multiple Emmy nominations across the Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Writing and Directing categories for the same series, and the first Asian director to receive multiple nominations in the Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series category.

Lee said the season reinforced his belief that the work matters more than accolades, describing storytelling as a way to reach "deeper truths". He credited the Asian and Asian American creatives who preceded him, praised Korean Netflix executives Jinny Howe and Irene Lee, and argued that Asian American stories contain "multitudes" beyond any single character. He also celebrated with the cast, including Youn Yuh-jung, Charles Melton, Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac and Cailee Spaeny. Lee is now bringing the same character-driven approach to Marvel's X-Men reboot, working with director Jake Schreier and "The Bear" writer Joanna Calo to prioritise the mutants' humanity over spectacle.
