A squirrel got loose inside one of Meta's offices in Bangkok, Thailand, this week, scampering past staff for at least 20 minutes before being caught, according to an internal memo seen by WIRED. The animal minorly injured a janitor during its escapade. The incident matters chiefly as a rare light-hearted moment for a workforce that has been demoralised by recent restructurings, mass layoffs and a controversial scheme to train AI on employee data without their initial consent.

The squirrel had reportedly arrived at the office inside a package accepted by a janitor from a cleaning company, and it escaped soon after; the memo did not explain why it had been delivered or where it now is. The injured worker was scratched on the finger, received first aid and was later taken to hospital for a check-up, while the janitor deemed responsible acknowledged their misconduct. Meta declined to comment. Executives have separately acknowledged low morale and are attempting to lift spirits through social outings and better office food, after complaints that healthy snacks such as nuts had been swapped for options like crisps.
