Wilson delighted boss Bellamy staying with Wales

BBC Sport · 1 month ago

Wales captain Harry Wilson has said he is delighted that head coach Craig Bellamy is staying with the national side after the manager's proposed move to Championship club Burnley fell through. Bellamy had looked set to take charge at Turf Moor in June but could not reach an agreement with the relegated club, and Wilson credited the coach with markedly improving both his own game and the wider Wales team over the past 18 months to two years.

Wilson, 29, has also completed a free transfer to Leeds United following the expiry of his Fulham contract, a decision he said was shaped by the strong Welsh contingent at Elland Road, including captain Ethan Ampadu, Dan James, Joe Rodon, Karl Darlow and Charlie Crew. The forward, who scored 10 goals in 36 Premier League appearances last season and has 17 in 69 caps for Wales, said he feels in the prime of his career and ready to shoulder greater leadership responsibility, though he played down comparisons with predecessor Gareth Bale. Wales begin their Nations League A campaign against Portugal, Denmark and Norway in September, with a home Euros to follow.
