Inquest into Maddy Cusack’s death adjourned again after new documents lodged
The inquest into the death of Sheffield United midfielder Maddy Cusack, who died on 20 September 2023 aged 27, has been adjourned for a second time this year, and will not resume until 7 December at the earliest. The coroner apologised to the family, with the delay understood to relate to additional documents being lodged shortly before proceedings were due to conclude, prolonging a process that has already stretched across nearly three years.
The hearing began on 29 June and has heard eight full days of evidence, and had been due to wrap up on Friday ahead of the coroner's conclusions on 27 July. Following fresh disclosure, the coroner said the former club doctor Dr Basu and former physio Francesca Carr must be recalled, and that former assistant physio Sean Bowskill may also be asked to give evidence. It follows an earlier 2026 adjournment after the family received 699 pages of new evidence from the club before Christmas, which their lawyers called "totally unacceptable"; the club denied any non-compliance. An FA investigation into the death has been made available to the coroner but not published.
