The hard rock band Mastodon has publicly addressed for the first time their decision to part ways with co-founder guitarist Brent Hinds in March, months before his fatal motorcycle accident in Atlanta in August at age 51. Through an emotional 35-minute YouTube video titled 'The Mastodon in the Room,' bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher, and drummer Brann Dailor reflect on their complicated relationship with Hinds, describing him as someone they deeply loved despite his documented struggles with mental health and addiction.

The remaining trio grapple with the duality of their 25-year connection, acknowledging both Hinds' passionate musicianship and his pattern of volatile behaviour that sometimes prompted them to distance themselves. They recount specific difficulties, including a 2007 incident resulting in a traumatic brain injury, and describe a recurring cycle where conflict was followed by reconciliation and renewed creative collaboration. The band emphasises that genuine affection and real hardship coexist in their memories, and they frame their grief as an unexpected weight—the permanent loss of someone who was integral to their identity as musicians and as brothers.
