Joanna Pettet Dies: ‘The Group’, ‘Casino Royale’, ‘Knots Landing’ Actor Was 83

Joanna Pettet, the London-born actor best known for Sidney Lumet's 1966 film The Group and the 1967 James Bond spoof Casino Royale, has died at the age of 83. She passed away on Tuesday 7 July 2026, with her death announced on Facebook by her friend and former manager Pam DuBois. DuBois noted that Pettet died on the 31st anniversary of the death of her son, Damien Zachary Cord. Her cause of death was not disclosed.

Pettet made her name playing Kay, the down-to-earth member of a clique of Vassar graduates, in the controversial The Group, before appearing as Mata Bond in Casino Royale. Though she had a notable film career, she worked more prolifically in television, featuring in series such as Night Gallery, Knots Landing, Charlie's Angels and Knight Rider before retiring in 1990. Off screen, she was married to actor Alex Cord and later linked to Terence Stamp and Alan Bates; she was also a friend of Sharon Tate, having lunched with her hours before Tate's 1969 murder by the Manson family, a visit re-created in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
