Dragon Age creator reckons the series is dead following Veilguard flop, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have another go at it if given the chance

Dragon Age: The Veilguard's poor 2024 sales performance has led series creator David Gaider to conclude that the franchise is effectively finished. Gaider, who left BioWare in 2016 and departed the Dragon Age team even earlier, believes the series has little chance of revival whilst remaining under Electronic Arts' ownership. The game's underperformance appears to mark the end of a long period during which the franchise survived multiple near-cancellations, as previous instalments consistently exceeded EA's commercial expectations.

Despite his gloomy outlook for the franchise's future, Gaider revealed he would reconsider his earlier decision to step away if circumstances allowed him to lead the series again. Having previously believed he had exhausted his creative contributions to Dragon Age, he now suggests he would approach a hypothetical return by revisiting the core elements that originally attracted players, whilst steering the narrative toward darker and more controversial territory.
