England defender Jarell Quansah has been given a two-match ban by Fifa after being sent off in England's last-16 World Cup win over Mexico on Sunday. The suspension is significant because it rules the 23-year-old out of Saturday's quarter-final against Norway in Miami, as well as a possible semi-final should England progress, deepening a selection headache in defence.
Quansah was dismissed following a VAR review of a sliding challenge on Jesus Gallardo, which Fifa judged to be serious foul play under Article 14 of its code of conduct. England had considered appealing, encouraged by Fifa's controversial decision to suspend a one-match ban for the USA's Folarin Balogun, but the two-game sanction stands. With Reece James an ongoing injury doubt at right-back, Ezri Konsa could be moved from centre-back to cover the role against Norway.
