Microsoft’s patch Tuesdays are about to get bigger

The Verge · 1 month ago

Microsoft has announced that its monthly security updates for Windows 11 will grow larger as it makes greater use of artificial intelligence to spot potential vulnerabilities earlier in the development process. In a blog post, the company said this shift means customers will see a higher volume of security fixes bundled into each release, reflecting a wider industry trend in which AI is being used both to discover and to exploit software weaknesses more rapidly.

The move comes amid a rise in AI-assisted hacking, with even amateur attackers using such tools to exploit flaws quickly, alongside researchers uncovering more high-severity vulnerabilities. Microsoft said it is updating its Secure Development Lifecycle to account for AI-enabled attack techniques, and is investing in Windows-specific tools and "agentic harnesses" to help generate and validate fixes. The company stressed that it aims to increase speed without compromising update quality, and that human developers will remain in the loop to review code and make risk-based decisions on updates.

  • Microsoft will use AI to find and fix more Windows security flaws.
  • Each patch release will bundle a higher volume of fixes.
  • Humans will still review code and approve updates.
