Snap Inc., the company behind Snapchat, has opened preorders for its first consumer augmented reality glasses, called SPECS, with shipping expected in the United States, United Kingdom and France in the autumn of 2026. The preorder price is $2,195, which includes a $200 refundable deposit to secure a reservation. The launch marks Snap's move into standalone AR eyewear, positioning the device as a daily-wear wearable computer aimed at creators, professionals and technology enthusiasts. SPECS is built from lightweight Swiss TR90 thermoplastic and comes in two sizes, 47mm and 52mm, with the smaller model weighing 4.6 ounces. Rather than a conventional powered screen, it uses transparent waveguide technology to overlay interface elements on ordinary-looking lenses, and can also project a full-colour display with a 51-degree field of view, likened to a 115-inch cinema screen viewed from about ten feet. The glasses feature electrochromatic auto-tinting, prescription compatibility, dual Snapdragon processors running Snap OS 2.0, and infrared and RGB cameras for computer vision and AI assistance. They offer an estimated four hours of tetherless battery life, extendable to 20 hours via an included charging case.
