Just 1 in 10 Ivy League trustees are Republican, Yale has none, report finds
A new report from the Buckley Institute, entitled "The Echo Chamber on Top: Governance in the Ivy League," has found that only about one in ten trustees at Ivy League universities identifies as Republican, with Yale's governing body having no registered Republicans at all. The findings have intensified debate over ideological diversity at America's most elite universities, with the institute's founder arguing that imbalance among university leadership contributes to wider problems on campus.
According to the report, of the 233 Ivy League trustees identified, 155 (67%) were registered Democrats, 52 (22%) were unaffiliated and 26 (11%) were Republicans, producing a roughly 6-to-1 ratio of Democrats to Republicans. Yale's sole governing body, the Yale Corporation, was singled out for having zero registered Republicans. Buckley Institute founder Lauren Noble said that if top universities want to address the "echo chamber in the classroom", they must also tackle the imbalance among their own leadership. The report additionally noted a comparable discrepancy in political donations, and referenced separate findings that Yale professors overwhelmingly donated to Democrats.
- Only 11% of Ivy League trustees are registered Republicans.
- Yale's governing body has no registered Republican members.
- Democrats outnumber Republicans roughly 6 to 1 among trustees.
