How Olivia Rodrigo Is Getting Back at the Trump Administration
Pop star Olivia Rodrigo is backing a voter-registration drive ahead of this year's US midterm elections, in what The Hollywood Reporter frames as a response to the Trump administration after one of her songs was used in an anti-immigration advertisement. In November, Rodrigo publicly criticised the Department of Homeland Security when her track "all-american bitch" featured in an Instagram post — made in collaboration with the White House account — that urged undocumented immigrants to self-deport and showed people being detained by ICE agents. Rodrigo, who is of Filipino descent, told the department not to use her songs to promote what she called "racist, hateful propaganda", and later described the episode as a "weaponization" of her art in interviews with Dazed and British Vogue.
Rodrigo is now helping launch a sweepstakes run by the non-profit HeadCount, which encourages entrants to check or update their voter registration, or explore election resources, for the chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip to her Daisy Chain Fields festival. The all-women festival takes place on 29 August in Irvine, California, with a line-up including Chappell Roan, Doechii, Santigold, Sarah McLachlan, Mitski, The Breeders, Bikini Kill and Stevie Nicks, and all net proceeds going to charities for women and girls. Organisers say the event will also feature an activism component, with on-site non-profits — reportedly including the Center for Reproductive Rights and Planned Parenthood — sharing resources on issues such as reproductive rights, maternal health and domestic violence prevention.
