Travellers take over school playing fields with more than a dozen caravans and threaten staff – forcing them to cancel sports day and PE classes
A group of travellers with more than a dozen caravans has set up an unauthorised encampment on a playing field used by Caldicot Comprehensive School in Caldicot, south Wales, forcing the school to cancel its sports day and outdoor PE lessons. Staff and students at the 1,300-pupil school have allegedly been subjected to threats by some of those parked on the grass, adding to disruption at the site.
The caravans have reportedly been in place for over a week on Monmouthshire County Council land shared between the school and Caldicot Leisure Centre, which is normally used for athletics and rugby. At least fourteen caravans are said to have arrived, and the sports day originally due to take place on Wednesday has been provisionally rescheduled for the following week. However, a school spokesperson said this is unlikely to go ahead, as it depends on the travellers leaving in time for a full clean-up of the field.
