Neon Circling U.K. Distribution Launch

Variety · 4 hours ago

The US independent distributor Neon, celebrated for its run of seven Palme d'Or winners and Oscar best picture successes such as "Anora" and "Parasite", is reportedly weighing a move into the UK distribution market. Sources say the company — which also runs an international sales operation — is considering establishing its own UK presence, with former Studiocanal UK boss Danny Perkins said to be consulting on the potential operation. The interest is significant because Neon has recently begun securing UK rights alongside North American rights in its acquisition deals, suggesting a more direct strategy across the Atlantic.

Neon has already picked up the UK, US and Australian rights to Cannes titles "Fjord", "Sheep in the Box" and "Hope", using local partners such as Picturehouse to release films, and it also holds UK rights to Luca Guadagnino's "Artificial". The company's commercial track record in Britain is notable: "Anora" took $3.7 million, "Parasite" grossed more than $15 million, and the horror hit "Longlegs" made $10.4 million, making the UK its second-biggest market after the US. Perkins brings deep experience — co-founding Optimum Releasing and overseeing releases including "Paddington" and "The Imitation Game" — though he also knows the sector's risks, as his Elysian Film Group's distribution arm went into liquidation earlier this year. Deadline first reported the story, and Neon and Perkins have been approached for comment.
