Music Industry Introduces Labels For Works That Use AI In Sound Recordings

Deadline · 1 month ago

A coalition of music industry bodies and artists' organisations has introduced a voluntary labelling system to flag the use of artificial intelligence in sound recordings. The scheme uses two simple icons to distinguish "AI-generated" works from "AI-assisted" ones, and is designed for adoption by digital music services, distributors and others. The move matters because AI-produced music is proliferating rapidly on streaming platforms, and the industry says listeners increasingly want transparency about how the music they hear was made.

Backers of the initiative include the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), IFPI, the Grammys, SAG-AFTRA, the Human Artistry Campaign and several independent-music associations. The "AI-generated" label—white capital letters "AI" on a black background—applies where generative AI produced the entirety or primary portion of a recording, such as the lead vocal or key instrumental, while the lowercase "ai" label denotes work created substantially by humans with AI used only for some expressive elements. The groups cited figures showing AI-generated tracks made up 44% of new music on Deezer and more than a third of tracks on Apple Music being "100% AI"; for now the labels do not cover AI use in lyrics, composition, music videos or cover art.
