Sheffield Council has released plans to modernise the city's ageing sports and leisure infrastructure through 2039, targeting facilities that currently operate at capacity and serve communities with limited access to recreation. Key projects include reopening a swimming pool at Goodwin sports centre—shuttered in 2023 for safety reasons—and refurbishing Woodburn Road athletics stadium to host accredited events, alongside improvements to Concord, Springs, and Hillsborough leisure centres.

Without current funding secured, the council intends to use the formalised strategy to seek grants from Sport England and other bodies. Officials have signalled a preference for enhancing existing facilities rather than building new ones, and aim to extend opening hours and make better use of community spaces whilst maintaining support for specialised activities including bowls, boxing, and climbing. A committee will review the strategy on 15 July.
