Karlovy Vary Reveals Award Winners: Aung Phyoe’s ‘Fruit Gathering’ Wins The Crystal Globe
The 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival closed with the Myanmar-set drama "Fruit Gathering" (Thit-thee Khu), directed by Aung Phyoe, winning the top prize, the Crystal Globe Grand Prix. The jury praised the film as a work that begins as a meditative portrait of work and friendship before shifting into a harrowing drama of obsession and queer desire. The win crowned what was described as one of the festival's starriest editions in some time.
The event honoured Dustin Hoffman, Juliette Binoche and cinematographer Robert Richardson with Crystal Globes for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema, while Festival President's Awards went to Jesse Eisenberg, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Magda Vášáryová and Jeffrey Wright. Among the competition winners, "The Guest" by Mads Mengel took the Special Jury Prize and Best Director, Anna Schinz won Best Actress for "A Happy Family", and Ghassan Saad won Best Actor for "Pipes". The Grand Prix carries a shared $25,000 award, while other prizes across the main and Proxima competitions ranged from $10,000 to $15,000.
