McIlroy struggles at fog-disrupted Scottish Open
Matt Fitzpatrick moved into a share of the lead at the Genesis Scottish Open, while overnight co-leader Rory McIlroy endured a difficult third round that was repeatedly interrupted by fog at the Renaissance Club in East Lothian. Thick haar caused two suspensions of play, leaving the round unfinished and 22 players still out on the course, with the day's leaders unable to complete their rounds.
Fitzpatrick made four birdies in his first seven holes to reach 12 under, before a bogey on his final hole of the day left him tied on 11 under with Michael Thorbjornsen. American Johnny Keefer set the clubhouse target at 10 under after a third-round 64, with defending champion Chris Gotterup, US Open winner Wyndham Clark and Jordan Smith also on 10 under but yet to finish, and Scotland's Bob MacIntyre a shot back. McIlroy, the world number two, dropped three shots in his eight completed holes — including a three-putt on the third and a missed putt from inside a foot on the seventh — to fall to six under, five behind Fitzpatrick. Play was scheduled to resume at 07:00 BST on Sunday.
