Beck has confirmed his first album in seven years, Ride Lonesome, and launched it with the song “In the Night” and a new video starring Denis Lavant. The release marks his return to the album cycle since 2019’s Hyperspace and is significant because it reconnects him with musicians involved in some of his most admired past records, suggesting both continuity and a renewed creative phase.

Ride Lonesome is due on 18 September via Capitol, after Beck first introduced the project in April with the title track and news of a tour. The 12-track album reunites him with Smokey Hormel, Joey Waronker, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and Jason Falkner, was recorded at Room B in Hollywood’s United Studios, and was mixed by longtime collaborator Nigel Godrich. Pitchfork also highlights the Mikai Karl-directed video for “In the Night”, while Beck says the sessions built on the chemistry of earlier collaborations but also uncovered new sounds and emotional textures.

Beck is an American musician known for moving between styles including alternative rock, folk, hip-hop and electronic music. He first became widely known in the 1990s with “Loser” and has since released albums such as Odelay, Sea Change and Morning Phase.

His work has often involved close partnerships with different producers and bands of musicians. Nigel Godrich, who has also worked extensively with Radiohead, has been a notable collaborator, while several players on the new record appeared on earlier Beck albums.

The gap since Hyperspace reflects a period in which Beck released singles and toured rather than putting out another full studio album. A new album can signal a return to a more sustained release and touring cycle, while also bringing together collaborators associated with earlier stages of his career.
