Emergencies on planet Earth: images from the climate crisis – in pictures
This Guardian photo gallery showcases images exploring the climate crisis and related humanitarian emergencies, tied to Summit Photo, the Royal Geographical Society's environmental and humanitarian photography forum running 17–19 July in London and online. The collection brings together leading photojournalists and artists whose work spans wildfires, flooding, plastic pollution, industrial hazards and displacement, illustrating how ecological breakdown intersects with poverty, conflict and human rights.
Featured images include James Balog's wildfire photography in Canada's Northwest Territories; Simon Townsley's portrait of a displaced family sheltering in Nigeria amid economic crisis and food insecurity; Gideon Mendel's account of a Florida family devastated by Hurricane Irma's flooding; Shahidul Alam's documentation of dangerous shipbreaking work in Chittagong, Bangladesh, and a Dhaka protest against the imprisonment of artists; Mandy Barker's images of seabirds dying from ingested plastic on Lord Howe Island; and Selene Magnolia Gatti's photographs of pigs surviving flooded factory farms in Italy.
