Liam Gallagher weighs in on England’s World Cup result: “Let the kids run wild”

NME · 1 month ago

Liam Gallagher has spoken out on X/Twitter following England's 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, praising the team's efforts while suggesting a less rigid style of play could help them finally win the tournament. The Oasis frontman's comments add to his high-profile running commentary on the tournament, during which the band's 1995 hit "Wonderwall" became the unofficial anthem of England's campaign after players sang it with fans following each victory.

England lost the semi-final in Atlanta on 15 July after Anthony Gordon's 55th-minute goal was cancelled out by Enzo Fernandez, before Lautaro Martinez won it for Argentina with a stoppage-time header. Gallagher wrote that it was "nobody's God given right to win the WC" and congratulated Argentina, while also arguing that England "won't win a WC until we get street wise" and should "let the kids run wild" rather than playing an overly technical game, in an implicit dig at manager Thomas Tuchel's tactics. England go on to face France in the third-place play-off on 18 July, with Argentina meeting Spain in the final the following day.
